Does the visitor have to submit anything?

No. The calculation happens in the browser, so the calculator is useful without an entry; add a submit step only when you want the lead as well.

How complicated can the formula get?

Advanced Calculations adds exponents, modulo, rounding, min and max, date and time maths and finance functions to Gravity Forms’ arithmetic, and a conditional formula picks between them — compound interest in a single field is well within it. What it will not do is look values up: rates kept in a spreadsheet or a records table need Populate Anything to bring them into the form first.

Why not embed a calculator from somewhere else?

An embed keeps the calculator, its wording and its styling on another company’s domain and inside their design. Building it in a form keeps all three on the page you publish, and you can change the rate the day it changes.
