Know who sent the next customer.

A signup page that grows by recommendation: every member leaves with a link of their own, and the next signup arrives knowing who sent them.

New signup Referred

The code arrived with them.

Referral code
RUNE-8H2
Referred by
Rowan Rune
Their own code
RUNE-9T4

The code in the link is matched to the entry that issued it.

Referrer Thank-you sent
A valid code connects the signup to its referrer

Illustrative experience

  • A code for every signup
  • The referrer read from the link
  • A thank-you for the referrer

The finished experience

Word of mouth you can actually see.

Every signup arrives with its referrer attached, so the thank-you goes out without anyone matching names.

A good fit for
Membership sites, courses and anything that grows by recommendation.

  1. 1

    Give every signup a code

Unique ID stamps each entry with the code that becomes that customer’s referral link.

    GP Unique ID

  2. 2

Read the code on the way in

The referral link carries the code in the URL, and Populate Anything looks up the entry that issued it, dropping the referrer’s name and email into hidden fields.

    GP Populate Anything

  3. 3

    Thank the referrer

Condition a notification on finding a valid referral record and send it to the referrer’s populated email address. The entry records who referred the new signup.

    Gravity Forms

What you’ll need.

Start with Gravity Forms. Add the capabilities this solution needs, then make the experience your own.

Taking it further

Add these optional plugins when your project calls for more.

Before you start

  • A signup form with unique referral codes and a link that carries the code.
  • For the optional eCommerce Fields Discount Field variant: GP eCommerce Fields, a configured Discount field, and a valid-referral condition. Taking payment also needs an official payment add-on, connected account and payment feed.
  • Check eligibility separately if a reward is limited to a first order. Neither a valid referral code nor a Discount field establishes that this is the customer’s first purchase.

Get this built.

A plan covers how many of our plugins you run at once, and on how many sites. Here is what this one needs.

Required

  • GP Unique IDPerks

  • GP Populate AnythingPerks

Optional

Gravity Perks Advanced $169 /year

2 perks need Advanced or above — on up to 3 sites.

Gravity Perks Pro $299 /year Taking all 2 optional perks too makes it 4 in all, which needs Pro.

Make it fit
your project.

What stops someone using their own code?

The entry records who referred whom for review. Optionally use GP Advanced Conditional Logic to compare the signup email with the populated referrer email and show a warning or hide Submit when they match. That deters ordinary self-referrals in the interface; enforce the rule server-side if it must resist crafted submissions.

Does the reward have to be a discount?

No. A thank-you notification or a reward you apply after review can use the same attribution record. An optional eCommerce Fields Discount Field can discount the referred signup when a valid code is found, as suggested in a staff reply on the spotlight. That extension does not implement first-order eligibility, and other discount approaches have their own requirements.
